Do authors ever prefer self-publishing vs. signing with a traditional publisher ? What are the pros + cons ?
I’m not aware of any authors who prefer self-publishing. In self-publishing, you pay the costs and eat the loss of any unsold books.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini was a self-published book, I believe. Then he promoted it like crazy by going to libraries and giving free speeches about his book. I believe he booked the library presentations himself and toured the country on his own money. Then someone from the real publishing world heard about him and he signed a real book deal.
Publishing houses pay you. That’s the main benefit.
To publish a book with a publishing house, you need an agent. Here’s a link about how to get an agent.
