Is it worth it to self-publish a novel?
Just out of curiosity. I don’t actually have one to publish, but I know my friend is working on one. She’s really just doing it for fun, but is an amazing writer supposedly (I’ve never actually read any of it, but all the professors at our college are obsessed with her).
Is it just a major waste of money, even if the book is really good? Do people actually get exposed to it & read them?
And what about the different packages? How much do you really need to spend/get?
I’m going to try to help her out, since she’s been through a lot lately, and I want to get an idea of whether it’s actually feasible, or if my pre-med schedule isn’t going to allow me to work enough to make a dent in it for her.
You don’t really make a return on it, except in very rare cases that involve a megaton of effort. (See: Eragon, originally self-published) If the book is really good, an agent or publisher will pick it up, making the subject moot. Self publishing is more about personal gratification than anything else.
