Allow me to illustrate:

In 1903 while Wilbur and Orville Wright were struggling to fly the worlds largest plane at Kitty Hawk, NC, Samuel Pierpont Langley with the aid of a large body of staff likewise was attempting to build an airplane.

Mr. Langley assumed that if he put a big enough engine on the airplane, it would fly. He focused all his energy on this one project of creating a powerful engine for the plane.

The Wright Brothers’ approached the situation with the idea of building a glider that would glide off a hilltop without the aid of an engine. They focused their energy on balance and steering. How the device would be powered was merely an after thought. Only after it worked with no power would they attempt to put an engine on it.

After three years of tedious experimentation the glider was working well, so they commissioned Charlie Taylor- a bicycle shop machinist to build the engine. It was the best engine he could design-twelve horsepower unit that weighed 180 pounds.

It goes without saying, the Wright Brothers changed the face of history. Few have ever heard of Samuel Pierpont Langely! Their approach of making the plane fly before applying high power was the more superior option. It yielded great results.

Langley had spent most of four years building an extraordinary engine to lift their flying machine. The Wrights has spent most of four years building a flying machine so artfully designed that it could be propelled into the air by a fairly ordinary internal combustion engine-Smithsonian Magazine, April 2003
