Subsidy Publisher vs. Commercial Publisher vs. Self Publishing?
What’s the difference between the three?
Self publishing is when you front the costs of all aspects of a book’s publishing, distribution, editing, and design yourself.
A subsidy publisher will ask for some of the costs involved with publishing a book from the author. So, say you have a book that you wrote – they may charge you to get an ISBN for it, print it, and distribute it, but they oversee all operations of it and they specialize in it. A lot of subsidy publishers are scams that really will not help the author achieve their goals.
Commercial publishers front all costs, and usually sign a contract with the author and their agent to discuss the terms of the agreement. Basically, this is the most famous publishers that you see at the book store – random house, bantam, DK, etc. They paid for everything, and send the author royalties.
I would tell you, if you are interested, to either self-publish, or find an agent and publish commercially. Never give your money to a company to publish your book.
