publishing internships chicago
Publishing in Chicago?

I wondered about the publishing industry in Chicago, and what companies are located. In addition, if any of these companies offer internships, it would be wonderful to know.

Outside Press university presses small shop, and academic societies (LN, Thomson, etc.), there is not a bunch of publishers in Chicago. The heart of book publishing trade has always been in New York, but it seems that you have reasons to seek to Chi-town. The best thing you can do is get yourself to the library to watch the latest edition of Literary Marketplace. The online version is the best because you can sort by city. Here, you'll know who is who and what specialties are in various houses, etc. This includes distributors, agents, relations agencies public and publishers. You can find literary agents and independent advertising firms in Chicago, which is always a good place to put one foot in the door. Working in a publishing house is totally different than working with an agent or public relations firm at least you can find if you enjoy working with authors and publishers who publish in general. You would be in contact with them a lot at one of these places. I know some people who moved from being booksellers jobs in publishing, so if you like books that you should take an eye on it. Good luck!
