How do I deal with racism literary work in a mixed-race?

I teach high school English, and we read "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey. I have a black student and a student whose descent, I am not sure. There are many racist terms in the book. How can I ensure that these students feel at ease? The book was published in the early 1960s, and therefore I said it came out before the real impetus behind the civil rights movement. But I am uncomfortable when some of these words are in place. Suggestions?
